Last year we kicked off our GameDev Bar Meetup events as a way to gather developers in Copenhagen for some drinks and mingling. That first time we had Chris James from Pocket Gamer around, looking to meet the local gamedev community and it was quite a blast.
Now, to celebrate the impending arrival of PG Connects Helsinki on 5-6th September and Steel Media’s entry into the VR space we’d like to invite game developers, publishers and other industry professionals to an evening drinks and network event held on Tuesday 23rd August (yes, just after Gamescom) from 6-9pm at The Dubliner Downtown (Ny Østergade 14 – not to be confused with the one in Amagertorv).

IGDA Denmark (also known as Foreningen af Spiludviklere i Danmark) is once again making a call for its yearly General Assembly, and we would like to invite you all to attend, participate and help shape the future of the organization.
The General Assembly will be held on August 8th 2016, starting at 18:00.
The meeting will take place at KnapNok Games office in Pilestræde 43, 3rd floor in Copenhagen.
We are always looking to hear new ideas, projects and other plans you may have for the association. Any proposals to discuss should be sent in written and actionable form to the board at firstname.lastname@example.org no later than 2 weeks before the assembly.
Our agenda will be as follows:
- Choice of moderator.
- Choice of minutes taker
- Yearly report of the Chairman
- Treasurer’s report and its approval
- Set membership fee
- Election of auditor and deputy auditor
- Election of Board

Normally by this point down the year, we would be super thrilled about how quickly we are selling out of Nordic Game Jam tickets. But 2016 is different from the rest.
If you’ve been following the announcements so far, Nordic Game Jam has changed its plans for it’s 10th anniversary, moving away from the cold winter of Copenhagen in February and right into the much warmer month of April. And while the nicer weather is surely a better way to celebrate the anniversary, there is a much bigger reason why we are moving the event to a different date than usual.
That reason is the newly formed Copenhagen Games Festival, the result of a collaboration between IGDA Denmark, Interactive Denmark and Producent Foreningen.
So what is this Copenhagen Games Festival? It’s a celebration of everything games, setting the spotlight on Danish Games. It gathers Nordic Game Jam 2016, the Spilprisen (Danish game awards), a games business conference, a games expo and much more, finishing big with a huge awards ceremony at the end of Nordic Game Jam 2016. We are planning really big for that one, so we hope you can plan ahead and stay in Copenhagen to enjoy it all!
Five days in April 2016 Copenhagen will turn into a hot spot for game designers, programmers, graphic artists, business experts, gamers and game interested locals and tourists. More than 1000 people will fill Copenhagen and other cities in Denmark, with games, creativity, technology and innovation.
With 190 Danish Game companies, 735 full time designers, programmers and innovative talents and a turnover increase of 196 % in the last six years, this is reason enough to put the Danish Game Industry on the national and international map, both geographically, politically and in business terms. Copenhagen Games Festival is set up to do just that.
We are also looking for partners and sponsors to help make it all happen, so you can also be a part of this too! You can contact us via our Contact Page and we will put you through with the organization team for the festival.
Don’t forget to book the week of April 6-10 2016 for what is surely going to be the biggest games event in Denmark!
Are you planning to attend GDC this year in San Francisco? As you may know, GDC is the biggest and most important game developers conference, and it’s a great opportunity to learn new techniques, hear about amazing projects and get to know game developers from all over the world.
But, if you’re a student, the price for the tickets can be quite expensive, making it difficult for many to even have a chance to attend.
However, if you are currently still studying, or you graduated 6 months before the event takes place in March, you are eligible to apply for an IGDA Scholarship to attend GDC!
It’s not too late to apply! The deadline is December 15th and all you have to do is go to this website and fill in the form. We strongly encourage you to give it a go!
All IGDA members coming from Denmark will also get a travel stipend reimbursement.
Please note that you must be an IGDA member through our parent organization in order to apply. For students, the fee is $30 USD (205 DKK approximately). Even if you are already a member of IGDA Denmark, scholarships require you to have an international membership. If you apply, please let us know by sending us an email to email@example.com so we can keep track of it!

It’s time for another Gamedev Bar Meet-up! The last one was a big success and everyone had a great time, so we were really looking forward to doing this again.

You’ve made some simple games already, one in 3D and a few in 2D. But… they are probably not the prettiest. You might even think that they look a little bit dull.
So… how can you fix that?
Tim Garbos will be giving you some tips and tricks to make sure that your game turns into something way more appealing with just a few tweaks that will take you less than an hour to learn.
As an example, here is the result of Tim’s talk last year, which took the game from the boring game on the left, to the fun-looking game on the right (which you can also play here!):

Afterwards, as usual, there will be some mingling over beers at the local bar next to Enghave station.
After the success of the first Unity Night (don’t forget to share your feedback with us!), we are more than happy to announce the next one with our Level 2: Taking it to the second dimension.
Once again, Lars will be taking you through a step-by-step basics of creating a Unity game. But this time, instead of working with 3D tools, he will show you the different workflow once you set up a Unity 2D scene.
Also, for those that couldn’t make it to the first event, you will be happy to know that this second lecture is prepared so that everyone can join in, so it’s still a good time to join the Unity Nights without feeling lost. Don’t miss the chance!

One of our favorite events in Copenhagen, SpilBar, is returning after a brief Summer break.
The bi-monthly event features game talks for everyone in the games industry, a game showcase and some free drinks while people mingle.
And the next one is happening this Wednesday, September 30th at 16.30 until 20.00, at the usual spot in Cinemateket, Bio Asta (Basement) in Gothersgade 55, Copenhagen.
For SpilBar 26, the event will feature a series of microtalks where we forget all about the overview and dive deep into the detail.
The speakers are:
Martin Fasterholdt, works at Playdead by day and tries to finish his thesis at night. The topic of his thesis is jumping in 2d platform games. Based on this he will present some of the subtle difference between the jumping in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Meat Boy. ”
Andreas Normand Grøntved, lead animator at Playdead, will share his thoughts and ambitions about his highly optimized 6-bone humanoid rig. A rig created specifically to make in-game crowds less costly in terms of performance.
Tim Garbos, currently works at Triband, but has spent the past year polishing a small ios puzzle game called Progress. He will talk about the journey from prototype to final product focusing on the small details and interesting lessons learned from playtesting.
Each talk will explore a single aspect, looking closely at what makes it essential to the player’s experience.
How much can four pixels of animation help your puzzle design? What is the difference between the way Mario and Meat Boy jump?
SpilBar is a bimonthly event, where everyone in or close to the computer games industry can meet and mingle. The meetings always start with a talk and end with a drink.
SpilBar is initiated by Kristine Ploug from DADIU, and Thomas Vigild, Headmaster at Vallekilde Game Academy. SpilBar is organized in collaboration with Spilordningen and Interactive Denmark.

IGDA Denmark and Aalborg University Copenhagen are once again joining forces to bring back the Unity Nights!
The popular game engine born in Copenhagen has grown into a really mature choice for game developers worldwide, whether you are working on 3D or 2D games, for consoles, PC or mobile platforms.
Now we want to give you a series of free lectures where you can go from zero to hero with Unity.
These lectures will take you from the very first basics of working with Unity to start creating your own games and polishing them up. Later lectures (dates to be announced) will take on more advanced topics such as working with the Mecanim animation system, scripting, physics and programming custom shaders. These will certainly help you also when you join one of the many game jams happening in Denmark!
The first of these lectures will take place on Wednesday, September 23rd at 18:00 at Aalborg University Copenhagen (near the Sydhavn S-train station), in the Guest Canteen area.
Lars Reng will be taking you through a step-by-step workshop in which you will learn the very basics of Unity and get going with your first Unity game. Learn the interface, controls and basic elements, as well as understanding a proper workflow. From there, you will create a game from scratch with Lars.
Lectures usually end with a questions session where you can come with your problems with Unity and we will try to help you as much as possible. Afterwards, it’s common for several of the attendees to go for some mingling over beers at the bar nearby.
And that’s not all! Don’t forget that later on we will announce more lectures to continue with the program into more advanced topics, so follow IGDA Denmark on Twitter and Facebook to stay updated with future announcements, as well as being the first one to hear about the next Unity Nights events.

The Danish “Summer” is not letting many of us concentrate on work. IGDA Denmark and Pocket Gamer would therefore like to invite game developers of all shapes and sizes to the first Copenhagen bar meet-up of the season.
These events are meant to be open gatherings where everyone can join in for beers or sodas, meet other developers, reunite with friends, and exchange ideas.
Everyone is more than welcome to join, so bring games and colleagues!
