Unity Nights Level 2: Taking it to the second dimension



After the success of the first Unity Night (don’t forget to share your feedback with us!), we are more than happy to announce the next one with our Level 2: Taking it to the second dimension.

Once again, Lars will be taking you through a step-by-step basics of creating a Unity game. But this time, instead of working with 3D tools, he will show you the different workflow once you set up a Unity 2D scene.

Also, for those that couldn’t make it to the first event, you will be happy to know that this second lecture is prepared so that everyone can join in, so it’s still a good time to join the Unity Nights without feeling lost. Don’t miss the chance!

The talk will take place Tuesday 29th of September, at 18.00 at the Aalborg University Copenhagen in A.C. Meyers Vænge 15, 2450 København.

SpilBar starts again and it’s all about the details



One of our favorite events in Copenhagen, SpilBar, is returning after a brief Summer break.

The bi-monthly event features game talks for everyone in the games industry, a game showcase and some free drinks while people mingle.

And the next one is happening this Wednesday, September 30th at 16.30 until 20.00, at the usual spot in Cinemateket, Bio Asta (Basement) in Gothersgade 55, Copenhagen.

For SpilBar 26, the event will feature a series of microtalks where we forget all about the overview and dive deep into the detail.

The speakers are:

Martin Fasterholdt, works at Playdead by day and tries to finish his thesis at night. The topic of his thesis is jumping in 2d platform games. Based on this he will present some of the subtle difference between the jumping in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Meat Boy. ”

Andreas Normand Grøntved, lead animator at Playdead, will share his thoughts and ambitions about his highly optimized 6-bone humanoid rig. A rig created specifically to make in-game crowds less costly in terms of performance.

Tim Garbos, currently works at Triband, but has spent the past year polishing a small ios puzzle game called Progress. He will talk about the journey from prototype to final product focusing on the small details and interesting lessons learned from playtesting.

Each talk will explore a single aspect, looking closely at what makes it essential to the player’s experience.
How much can four pixels of animation help your puzzle design? What is the difference between the way Mario and Meat Boy jump?

Game Audio event in Copenhagen – Wwise Tour Europe 2015



Are you interested in sound design for games or already working in the games industry in an audio-related position?

The leading developer for game audio middleware, Audiokinetic, has announced that they will be coming to Copenhagen on their European tour for 2015. Even better, they have invited everyone for free (with limited seating) to join in for a talk about their professional Wwise software on February 5th 2015 from 14.00 to 19.00.

They will be showing some case examples from the game Assassin’s Creed IV – Black Flag and how Wwise became the tool that allowed them to create true immersive audio experiences.

The speakers are Aldo Sampaio, Audio Director and Alexis Rousseau-Dupuis, Sound Programmer at Ubisoft Entertainment, making this one talk not to miss.

The talk is aimed at sound designers, media composers and also game developers and intends to have attendees walking away from the event with inspiration on how to apply these techniques on your own games.

While the event is free to attend, seating availability is limited.

Conference ticket + bus ride to [Select/Start] PLAY for 190 DKK



There’s a new games conference around, and this one is BIG! In fact, we dare say this is probably Denmark’s biggest games conference to date, with over 20 speakers, both from the AAA games industry and indies, and an expo with 25 games showcasing some of the most creative uses of alternative control methods, new gameplay mechanics and just simply fun games.

It’s called [Select/Start] PLAY and it takes place on October 3rd in Viborg, Denmark.

And we are sponsoring a bus from Copenhagen to Viborg and back for just 190 DKK!

While it’s the first year this conference is being held, there’s no denying that the organizers at The Animation Workshop have put together an impressive line-up. There’s well-known industry figures such as Dan Adelman, who until very recently worked for almost 9 years at Nintendo of America. There’s Martin Hollis, who created the insanely well-regarded GoldenEye and Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64. Mike Dailly, who worked on Lemmings and GTA when he was at DMA Design before it became Rockstar North. Shawn Robertson, Lead Animator for Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite. Bjørn Jacobsen, Sound Designer for EVE: OnlineRyan Green, creator of the heart-breaking That Dragon, CancerEline Muijres, producer at GameOven which creates new physical game experiences like Bounden and Fingle. There’s Dajana Dimovska, Mata Haggis, Eva Gaspar, Ed Cooke…

The list goes on and on to cover everything in games from game design lectures to how to protect your IP. And that is before we even get to the w00t GameClubbing event at night at the Games Expo site next door.

Put simply, this is one incredibly packed event. And it’s not even expensive at all, with normal tickets running at 120 DKK and students getting in for free.

But we know a lot of people are worried about having to travel all the way to Viborg for the conference. Some don’t know how exactly to get there, and many don’t want to bother with finding a place to stay.

Which is why IGDA Denmark is sponsoring a bus from Copenhagen to Viborg specifically for this event!

We have partnered with the organizers of [Select/Start] PLAY to make sure that those in the Copenhagen area (or even those coming from Sweden!) can have it as easiest as possible to join the conference.

What we are offering is a round bus trip from Copenhagen to Viborg and back included with a full conference ticket for the most affordable price we could reach: 190 DKK.

The bus we are sponsoring will leave from Copenhagen at 5 am on October 3rd and will arrive to Viborg in time for the conference to start.

SpilBar 21 – Stone Librande and Guldbrikken Awards



First of all, it feels great to finally be able to use the new SpilBar logo that was unveiled at the previous SpilBar 20 (which was a great celebratory event full of great micro-talks and marked the last event for the Spring 2014 semester.

But after the Summer a new period begins, and what better way to do so than with a new SpilBar event come September 11th with nothing less than Stone Librande as the guest speaker!

If case his name doesn’t directly ring a bell, perhaps his works will: Stone Librande is Lead Designer at Riot Games (League of Legends) and has worked in the game industry for over 10 years on games such as Diablo 3Spore, and SimCity. In addition to his full-time job designing video games, he also teaches game design courses at Cogswell College and at Carnegie Mellon’s ETC program. He runs design seminars at the Game Developers Conference and at other locations around the world. An avid game collector, Stone’s walk-in closet holds more than 300 card and board games, including 30 that he has designed himself.

Over many years, Stone has been designing card and board games to entertain his children as they grew from age 3 to age 22. During his talk at SpilBar 21, titled 19 Games in 19 Years, he will show 19 of those games and describe how his design techniques have evolved over time, as he went from making simple color matching games to tactical battle simulations. Along the way he will talk about the lessons he has learned and how his children have shaped his personal design philosophy. He invites you to create your own games for your family and friends and shares many tips that will help get you started. 

But not only that, this event will once again host the Guldbrikken Awards, which was so successful last year, where the best board games of 2014 will receive awards. As usual there will be a whole bunch of board games to play, both well known ones and unpublished ones (with an open call for games coming soon!)

SpilBar 19: Stand by your fans



Once again DADIU invites everyone to join the next SpilBar event, this time about the paradox of fans: how do you deal with your fanbase when they tend to be such a tricky group to handle?

This time the event will take place at a new venue, the Design Society, located in HC Andersens Boulevard 27 in Copenhagen, and will go from 16:30 to 20:00 on Thursday, March 27th 2014.

Frederikke Hoff: I Was Told There’d be LEGO Bricks …
LEGO fans make up one of the most enthusiastic online fan communities in existence. We don’t mean kids within the product target group; we mean the teen and adult fans. That’s right: Adult fans! By nature, these fans build what appeals to grown-ups, and that doesn’t always fit well with the company line. So how does The LEGO Group nurture these online fans while not pissing them off? Frederikke Hoff from the LEGO Group talks about online fans and co-creation.

Roman Graebsch: Bound by words and expectations
In this talk, Roman will highlight why you cannot simply run off and develop a game which is part of a revered 20 year old franchise still developed by fans throughout the world today. He will present the challenges of convincing die-hard fans that ’we are doing it right this time, now give us your money!’. Furthermore, what does it mean to follow up on a successfully funded Kickstarter project, and how to best interact with your community? Promises were made – how can you keep them, how does it influence your game design decisions? What opportunities lie there in being an independent studio creating a crowd funded niche game with a premium payment model – and how it all ties into making the game you want to make – for yourself and the customer alike.

It’s time to learn Unity from beginner to pro



Here at IGDA Denmark we are big fans of Unity, the popular game engine that was born in Copenhagen and quickly caught on with indie game developers, especially in the mobile market. Since it first came out in 2005 the engine has been getting all sort of improvements in usability, performance, features and soon a great new 2D workflow system that makes modern game development extremely accessible to everyone. It’s no wonder it’s become such a widely used engine!

So after some careful planning we want to announce the Unity Nights, a series of free lectures where you can go from zero to hero with Unity.

These lectures will take you from the very first basics of working with Unity to start creating your own games and polishing them up. Later lectures will take on more advanced topics such as working with the Mecanim animation system, scripting, physics and programming custom shaders. These will certainly help you also when you join one of the many game jams happening in Denmark!

But for the moment being, let’s focus on the first three lectures:

  • Thursday, September 26th – Unity for absolute dummies
  • Wednesday, October 2nd – Building your first game in Unity
  • Thursday, October 10th – Building a BETTER game with Unity

The first lecture will get you accustomed with Unity, it’s interface, controls and basic elements, as well as learning a proper workflow. No coding skills required! (Though they will, of course, help). The following two lectures are step-by-step examples where you will be making a fully working game in a tutorial style. If you prefer to, you can save the event on Facebook as well!

All the lectures will begin at 19:00 in order to keep a consistent schedule. Also these lectures will end with a questions session where you can come with your problems with Unity and we will try to help you as much as possible. The location is at Aalborg University Copenhagen, located in Sydhavn (not far from the Sydhavn S-train station, a couple of stops away from the central train station). We will be placing signs at the entrance so you can find the room where these lectures will be taking place.

And that’s not all! Don’t forget that later on we will announce more lectures to continue with the program into more advanced topics, so keep updated with our announcements here or on our Twitter and Facebook pages to be the first one to hear about upcoming Unity Nights!

Luck vs. Skill in Games talk by Magic: The Gathering creator


Richard Garfield

EDIT: Due to the high amount of participants who have shown interest on Facebook, we have decided to move the talk to the biggest auditorium at ITU: Auditorium 1.

Richard Garfield, Ph.D. in Combinatorial Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania, best known for being the designer of the wildly popular collectible card game Magic: The Gathering, will be giving a talk at the IT University of Copenhagen on Luck in Games.

Now, if you’ve been following our news here, you already know that Garfield is one of the speakers lined up for this month’s board-games focused SpilBar 16 event alongside Reiner Knizia.

But this is not going to be the only chance you got to see him talk!

Whereas his talk during SpilBar will focus on gameplay balancing, the one IGDA Denmark will be hosting at the IT University of Copenhagen will focus on Luck in Games and will, ironically, be taking place in September, Friday 13th.

The talk is open for everyone (as long as there is space available), so even if you plan on attending the SpilBar event (which you totally should!) you are more than welcome to join this really interesting talk.

And, with the talk being on a Friday afternoon, you will be able to stop by ITU’s Scrollbar after the talk for a drink or two.
